Services of J.C. Baldwin Construction Company
Sea Wall Construction
Building a seawall is a delicate balance between engineering and art. These walls must often be built under extremely harsh conditions, with the oceans waves lapping at the wheels of the equipment, squeezed in between the water and the structures they are intended to protect. As with any project that will be built and subject to the view of the entire world, it is essential that the end product performs its function as well as providing a breathtaking view that does not adversely impact the environment.
Shoreline and Bluff Stabilization
Another of California’s most precious natural resources is the coastline that is such an inherent part of our lifestyle. California’s beaches are world famous, and protecting the natural beauty of our shoreline has been the backbone of J.C. Baldwin’s business since our inception. Development along the coastline is a subject that affects not only those who chose to live there, but also everyone who wishes to access our beaches, whether for surfing, swimming, fishing, or just playing in the sand. Unfortunately coastal development has resulted in conditions that are sometimes detrimental to the natural processes that not only created our beaches, but sustain them as well. We take great pride in working with others who strive to take a balanced approach to protecting structures and maintaining a coastal environment that we will all be able to enjoy for this and future generations.
Landslide and Slope Stabilization and Repair
Southern California is well known for the steep terrain that is typical of our neighborhoods. Unfortunately, whether due to natural erosion, weathering, clay seams, or other inherent instabilities, or even man-made conditions such as over-steepening of slopes during development, many homes and structures built adjacent to bluffs and steep hillsides have been found to be at risk of damage and even potential demolition. Landslides can range from a small slump of just a few cubic yards of earth sliding down a hill creating a costly inconvenience to a homeowner to lateral and vertical movement of millions of cubic yards of earth which can wipe out homes, roads and bridges, and other structures, costing millions to repair. Some landslides can be assessed by qualified geotechnical engineers, monitored and stabilized before large scale movement results in a catastrophe. Other failures, such as mud slides and debris flows typically occur with little to no prior warning as a result of heavy rainfalls saturating unprotected slopes and hillsides which may have been left barren as a result of fires of other natural or man-made activities. Regardless of the failure type, once large scale movement begins, there is often little to do but get out of the way.
Soil Nails and Tiebacks
Installation of soil nails and tiebacks requires highly specialized equipment and a highly trained work force. These methods are used to stabilize slopes and landslides, and are often installed in conjunction with various types of retaining walls and slope facings. Special equipment is required to be able to drill horizontally into a hillside for distances of 100-feet or more, install the tieback or soil nail and then inject the grout under pressure to achieve the proper bond strength.
Earthquake Damage Repair
Earthquakes are very common throughout California and the western United States and the costs related to the resultant damage can run into billions of dollars. Ground shaking due to earthquakes can directly lead to damage to foundations and structures, and can also cause liquefaction, lateral spreading, seismic settlement, and landslides causing damage to structures, roads, and other improvements. J.C. Baldwin has the capacity to resolve and repair many forms of the resultant damages and works with engineers, contractors and developers to repair and restore damaged structures to their original condition.
Building Foundation Underpinning and Repair
Damage to building foundations accounts for billions of dollars in cost every year, whether it be from expansive soils, settlement, landslides, earthquake damage or just improper construction. Building foundation types range from simple shallow spread footings to large mat slabs and drilled caissons. J.C. Baldwin understands that any structure depends on its foundation for proper performance of the entire structure and all its components. J.C. Baldwin has the technical capability to modify, improve or install all types of foundations and stabilization methods and has developed teaming relationships with structural and geotechnical engineering firms that can provide appropriate designs, including preparation of preliminary and final plans and assist with submittals to the proper agencies.
